چکیده

1. Introduction The popularity of wireless devices, such as laptop computers, mobile phones, personal digital assistants, smartcards, digital cameras etc. is rapidly increasing. Their computing capabilities are growing quickly, while their size is shrinking, allowing many of them to become more and more part of everyday life. These devices can be connected to wireless networks of increasing bandwidth, and software development kits are available that can be used by third parties to develop applications. The combined use of these technologies on personal devices enables people to access their personal information as well as public resources anytime and anywhere.

A Middleware Architecture for Developing Mobile Applications

In this chapter, the authors present MoCA, a service-oriented middleware architecture that supports the development and deployment of distributed applications for mobile devices, which are inherently context-aware and adaptive. Besides explaining its main services and APIs, they discuss in which ways the MoCA architecture supports some well-known software engineering principles that apply to th...

Middleware for Mobile Computing: Awareness vs. Transparency

In this paper we argue that middleware solutions for wired distributed systems cannot be used in a mobile setting. We show that mobile applications impose new requirements that run counter to the principles on which current middleware systems have been built. We propose the use of reflection capabilities and meta-data to pave the way for a new generation of middleware platforms designed to supp...

Uncoupling Coordination: Tuple-based Models for Mobility

This chapter focuses on tuple-based (Linda-like) coordination models as middleware services for mobile and pervasive computing systems. After having introduced the basic concepts of tuple-based coordination, the chapter discusses the suitability of tuple-based models for mobility and introduces a simple taxonomy of tuplebased middleware models for mobile systems. Then, on the basis of the intro...

Design of MOBILE MOM: Message Oriented Middleware Service for Mobile Computing

Message oriented middleware (MOM) is a specific class of middleware that operates on the principles of message passing or message queuing. Existing MOM syste doesn’t support the function for mobile computing environment. In the near future, requirements of mobile computing will increase and more dynamic service for mobile computing will be required. And i nteracting with wireless networks is be...

Techniques for Dynamic Adaptation of Mobile Services

This chapter discusses the dynamic adaptation of software for mobile computing. The primary focus of the chapter is to discuss a number of techniques for adapting software as it runs, and managing the application of those adaptations. In a mobile computing environment the need for adaptation can often arise as a result of a spontaneous change in the context of the operating environment, ancilla...
